The Annual Popham Art Show features the extraordinary work of local fine art painters and photographers, along with amazing woodcuts and fine crafts on exhibit and for sale.  One of a kind pieces by accomplished and award-winning artists – all in the charming backdrop of Popham Village – this show is a find!

Centre St Arts Gallery, LLC, at 11 Centre Street in Bath invites the public to a reception on Friday, May 24 from 5 -7 pm, to open the new exhibition: “Katahdin and the Great Outdoors” featuring the work of all nineteen gallery artist plus guest artist Jillian Herrigel, of Phippsburg.

Several works, in watercolor, oil, acrylic and pastel,  featuring Mount Katahdin, Maine and other landscapes, will be on exhibit until June 29, 2013.

Admission to the gallery is free.  Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday, noon to 5 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm through May 31; from June 1, the gallery will be open Wednesday though Monday, noon to 6 pm, except Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday noon to 4 pm.

The 3rd Friday Bath ArtWalk & Tour kicks off with our first event of the season this Friday on May 17! The 2013 Bath ArtWalks will be held on the third Friday of each month,  5-8pm, from May through September.

This year’s first Bath Art Walk on May 17  will include a juried exhibition of student art at Mae’s Café (5:00 – 7:30 pm) at the corner of High and Centre Streets.  The student exhibition from Morse High School’s fine arts program is in its sixth season, but this is the first time it has connected with the Art Walk.

Other group exhibits will be on display at  Bath City Hall Auditorium and Nancy Carleton Real Estate offices on Commercial Street.  Brochures with participating artist locations will be available at group venues in during ArtWalk, and in advance at the Main Street Bath office at 15 Commercial Street.

Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m. – “Focus on Maine Street” Walking Tour, beginning outside the Pejepscot Historical Society’s main entrance at 159 Park Row . The tour will be guided by historian Dick Snow and will highlight the evolving uses of many familiar Maine Street buildings.

A Historic Preservation Month activity sponsored by Brunswick Village Review Board and Pejepscot Historical Society.

A “Focus on Maine Street” Photo Exhibit is on display at the Brunswick Visitors Center at Maine Street Station throughout the month of May.

The contest is part of the Village Review Board’s annual Historic Preservation Month activities.

The Historic Preservation Month theme this year is “Focus on Maine Street,” dovetailing with the Brunswick Downtown Association’s current effort to have the heart of the Maine Street commercial district designated a National Register Historic District.

Sweeping the Portland Phoenix “Best Music Poll”  awards  each year since forming, the band has gathered a total of 8  awards from  the Phoenix, including “Best Local Band” (2), “Best Live Act” (2), “Best  Local Album” (2), “Best Song,” and “Best Roots Act.”  Other accolades include first prize at the Oxford Rockin’ Country  Showdown in 2011,  nominations
for “Best Maine Act” in the 2011 New  England Music Awards,  and appearances in numerous local and national  ”Best of 2011″ lists this  past year.

 All 15 members of Points of View Artists are represented in the season-opening exhibit,   Sheer Madness.

This group show aims to capture the wild, whimsical and sometimes wacky world of art.   Many of the pieces will be primarily nonobjective works that make no direct reference to anything in the visible, exterior or physical world and speak metaphorically and poetically.

Or, they may just be kind of crazy, fun pieces.  Having been trapped inside the studio through Winter’s cold and snow, art is bursting forth in all its glory and leading the way into Spring.

Jennifer Litchfield has been living and painting in coastal Maine for the past 16 years. Originally from Australia, where she pursued a medical career in Sydney for 20 years, Litchfield moved to the United States in 1994 after meeting and marrying her American husband.

Art has always been one of her great loves and she took the opportunity of her new life to develop her passion for painting, drawing and color. Over the past 16 years Litchfield has studied painting with a number of fine teachers.

What excites her now is working in either oils, acrylics or pastels exploring abstract and semi abstract design based on and inspired by aspects of landscape, as well as painting more realistically. She likes to go back and forth between the different mediums and find that each one informs the other.

For many summers she and her husband have cruised the Maine coast. So much of the inspiration for her paintings comes from those wonderful journeys, wandering  through the islands, observing the ever-changing light, patterns on water, rocks and the beauty of the shorelines.

Admission is free and refreshments will be served.

Artist Livy Glaubitz, of Bath, has traveled the world and brought back more than photographs; she has journaled all of her trips and will present her travel journals on Saturday, May 11. She will also speak on her techniques, media, and give tips on getting started, materials, and interacting with local residents. First 2nd Friday ArtWalk of the season is next Friday  night in Brunswick. Take a stroll through town to enjoy the music and art from our local creative community.

Talk with artists about their work and perhaps fall in love with the perfect addition of art to buy for your home or a friend. Enjoy live music at many venues and sample the refreshments. It’s an enjoyable cultural evening on the town the second Friday of every month from May through October.

All within walking distance of each other in downtown Brunswick, explore 13 working artist studios; more than 25 artists displaying and selling at two “pop-up” sites; over 100 artists showing at cooperative sites, restaurants and businesses; PLUS, 7 art galleries and, 2 art museums at Bowdoin College. Rooted in old-time country, with a bluegrass kick and the bounce of a street-corner jug band, Tricky Britches will put some swing in your step from the moment you hear them. Songwriting chock full of down-home harmonies and dirty licks, their original material harkens back to humble beginnings sawing out mountain tunes on the Portland, Maine sidewalk.

Band members Jed Bresette, Seth Doyle, Tyler Lienhardt, and Ryan Wilkinson formed Tricky Britches in 2009, playing on street corners across the country, simply as a means of paying for a road trip. Suddenly there were weddings, parties, and dances to be played, and before the boys knew it, Tricky Britches had gained too much momentum to be stopped. As time went by, they focused more on songwriting and original material, which the majority of their recorded tracks are. Their influences include John Hartford, Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, The Grateful Dead, The Everly Brothers, and American traditional folk music. Their 2011 album Hard Fought Day has been played all across New England, and their new album Good Company, will be released in May of 2013.

“In an age of auto-tune and manufactured music, Tricky Britches isn’t just a throwback – they’re a look forward. When we tire of the digital and the plastic, we can comfort ourselves in the warm embrace of three-part harmonies, fire-breathing fiddle and mandolin licks, and the thump-thump to the gut of a stand-up bass.
