The doors of the Stable Gallery at 26 Water Street, Damariscotta are open for the 2013 season. This will be the eighth summer that the Stable has offered new and imaginative art in a variety of forms to the mid-coast area. The work of several new commission artists will join the twelve members artists for this season.

The first Opening for 2013 will be on Friday, May 17 from 5 to 7 at the Gallery. Music will be provided by Dave Mello, and guests will be treated with an array of delicious hors d’oeuvres. Shown in the central high ceilinged room of the Gallery will be ten featured artists. Entitled “Here On Earth”, this show will include five painters, a metalsmith, two ceramic artists and two sculptors.

Rosalind Welsh will exhibit her sculpted sewn paintings of abstracted natural forms, while Priscilla McCandless adds to the colorful aspect of this show with her magical realism. Caroline Davis expands her painting to include several media as she explores bird forms. The impressionistic work of John Allen contrasts nicely with Susan Bartlett Rice’s colorful rendering of long standing traditions of Maine life and unique treatment of winter scenes.

Guests can look forward to the new pieces of symmetrical and symbolic jewelry created by Mary Hall. Roz Welsh, who is a jeweler as well as painter will add new pieces to her exhibit.

Guy Marsden’s beautiful furniture using vertical staves will join his digital sculpture which creates random number patterns. Obadiah Buell will feature stone sculpture invoking natural elements as well as functional stonework.

Two new commission artists for this year include ceramicists Barbara Eldred and Elizabeth Louden. Elizabeth’s work is drawn from many cultures and media, while Barbara’s passion for color, design and symbols shows up in her masks and animal forms, as well as her monoprints.

Located in the handsome stable connected to the Victorian house once belonging to clipper ship builder Eldridge Norris, the Stable is a fitting location for an array of talent. The tack room and box stalls are faced with black walnut and provide a beautiful background for changing exhibits. There will be five exhibits during the summer. The next opening will be June 14. Daily hours are 10 to 5. The public is invited to enjoy the festivities of all openings and to see the work in a leisurely fashion every day.

Showtimes:
Fri May 10 | 8pm | $12 in advance, $15 day of show
What Jenna Campbell, Ed Desjardins & Martin Swinger have in common is a talent for singing original and honest stories about real life experiences in an intimately
appealing and musically satisfying show. Together they offer Jenna’s soulfully sweet voice reflecting a lifetime of earthy experience, Ed’s wisdom in sharing
the effect of history and time on a personal journey and Martin’s zest for universal stories that manage to balence outrageous humor and profound depth on the head
of a pin. Combining simple acoustic and electric guitars with keyboards and their three beautiful voices in richly haunting harmony, Jenna, Ed and Martin take turns
leading as they weave a musical tapestry of delicacy and strength like a dog-eared book of favorite short stories.

Brilliant entertainer Greg Klyma will return to the DRA’s Round Top Coffee House as our feature performer on March 10th. Arriving in Maine directly from his national one-man tour, Greg Klyma puts on a show everybody should see and hear. Klyma is a Rust Belt vagabond – a home-cooked meal and a vaudeville show in a fast food, karaoke world. As Sarah Craig (manager of the historic Caffe Lena) says, “the stories blend seamlessly into songs, evoking a flavor of Mark Twain, Woody Guthrie and David Sedaris.”

A prolific songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and seasoned performer, Klyma brings to every stage a catalog of songs that assume audiences are both smart and able to laugh. Sing Out Magazine says that Greg Klyma “is the real deal, singing about stuff that matters.” Really, folks, you don’t want to miss this show.

The DRA Round Top Coffee House open mic is held on the second Friday of each month. The DRA invites musicians, singers, poets and other performers to sign up and demonstrate their talents during the open mic portion of the Coffee House. The stage is open to everyone. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The open mic runs from 6:45 to 8:15, with a 15-minute break before the feature act from 8:30 to 9:30.

The open mic is a series of eight-minute, two-song slots, and is designed for individual or small group performances. Performers should be able to walk up on stage and set up quickly. To be assured of a slot, performers should show up to sign up promptly at 6:30.

Coffee and snacks are available. A plate or two of home-baked goods or a volunteer shift at the open mic earns free admission.

Rising Tide Community Market sponsors the DRA Round Top Coffee House by providing refreshments for each show. Rising Tide is proud to sponsor this opportunity for the Damariscotta community to hear some great music from local talent and from around the region.

The DRA Round Top Coffee House is held at DRA’s Round Top Farm, 3 Round Top Lane, just off US Route 1B (Main Street) in Damariscotta, with onsite parking. The venue is across the street from Hammond Lumber and next to Round Top Ice Cream.

Admission is $7 ($4 for Seniors, free for kids 12 and under). For more information call Heather Hardy or Jason Anthony at 677-2354 or the DRA at 563-1393.

Jennifer Litchfield has been living and painting in coastal Maine for the past 16 years. Originally from Australia, where she pursued a medical career in Sydney for 20 years, Litchfield moved to the United States in 1994 after meeting and marrying her American husband.

Art has always been one of her great loves and she took the opportunity of her new life to develop her passion for painting, drawing and color. Over the past 16 years Litchfield has studied painting with a number of fine teachers.

What excites her now is working in either oils, acrylics or pastels exploring abstract and semi abstract design based on and inspired by aspects of landscape, as well as painting more realistically. She likes to go back and forth between the different mediums and find that each one informs the other.

For many summers she and her husband have cruised the Maine coast. So much of the inspiration for her paintings comes from those wonderful journeys, wandering through the islands, observing the ever-changing light, patterns on water, rocks and the beauty of the shorelines.

First 2nd Friday ArtWalk of the season is next Friday night in Brunswick. Take a stroll through town to enjoy the music and art from our local creative community.

Talk with artists about their work and perhaps fall in love with the perfect addition of art to buy for your home or a friend. Enjoy live music at many venues and sample the refreshments. It’s an enjoyable cultural evening on the town the second Friday of every month from May through October.

All within walking distance of each other in downtown Brunswick, explore 13 working artist studios; more than 25 artists displaying and selling at two “pop-up” sites; over 100 artists showing at cooperative sites, restaurants and businesses; PLUS, 7 art galleries and, 2 art museums at Bowdoin College.

Put away your mud boots, haul out your dancing shoes, and come to Patten Free Library in Bath for an evening of foot-stomping bluegrass music by Portland band Tricky Britches.

The concert starts at 6:30pm on Tuesday, May 14. This event is free and open to the public.

Rooted in old-time country, with a bluegrass kick and the bounce of a street-corner jug band, Tricky Britches will put some swing in your step from the moment you hear them. Songwriting chock full of down-home harmonies and dirty licks, their original material harkens back to humble beginnings sawing out mountain tunes on the Portland, Maine sidewalk.

Band members Jed Bresette, Seth Doyle, Tyler Lienhardt, and Ryan Wilkinson formed Tricky Britches in 2009, playing on street corners across the country, simply as a means of paying for a road trip. Suddenly there were weddings, parties, and dances to be played, and before the boys knew it, Tricky Britches had gained too much momentum to be stopped. As time went by, they focused more on songwriting and original material, which the majority of their recorded tracks are. Their influences include John Hartford, Hank Williams, Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, The Grateful Dead, The Everly Brothers, and American traditional folk music. Their 2011 album Hard Fought Day has been played all across New England, and their new album Good Company, will be released in May of 2013.

“In an age of auto-tune and manufactured music, Tricky Britches isn’t just a throwback – they’re a look forward. When we tire of the digital and the plastic, we can comfort ourselves in the warm embrace of three-part harmonies, fire-breathing fiddle and mandolin licks, and the thump-thump to the gut of a stand-up bass. Not only do they reintroduce us to the delicious crudeness of early twentieth century tunes like “Greasy Coat,” but even their originals sound old as dirt. As comfortable on a street corner or front porch as they are on stage and under the lights, Tricky Britches is right in the middle of a new movement toward old time music, along with Old Crow Medicine Show, the Avett Brothers, the Toughcats, and the Hackensaw Boys. Auto-tune? Maybe they’ll figure that out for the banjo some day…”- Sam Pfeifle, Portland Phoenix
